This report and accompanying summary share findings from a mixed-methods study of The William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation 2Gen Deep Impact Grantmaking strategy. JBA completed the evaluation to build knowledge and awareness about the Foundation’s efforts and its impact on grantee organizations to date.

  • The Foundation has been influential in shifting organizational mindsets and helping establish a 2Gen approach. Grantees reported incorporating family voice into services and operations and generally strengthening partnerships and collaboration.
  • Grantees and families attributed improvements to the 2Gen approach, including increased caregiver empowerment and self-confidence, social capital and connection, economic mobility, and educational attainment.
  • Many factors that grantees said facilitated—or imposed barriers to—implementing a 2Gen approach align with factors identified by the research literature and experts in the field.
  • There are many strengths to the Foundation’s Deep Impact Grantmaking strategy and a continued need to balance a flexible funding approach with the ability to demonstrate improved caregiver, child, and family outcomes.
